The Zanskar range in the Ladakh region of the Great Himalayas is believed to have been formed approximately 45 million years ago when the Indian Plate folded into the stationary landmass of Asia. Unlike the Himalayas, which were formed from the Indian plate’s base material, the Zanskar Range is composed of loose layers of sediment from the ocean floor. This ongoing drift is responsible for the frequent earthquakes experienced in the Zanskar range within the Himalayan region.
As a result, when riding through these areas, one can hear the loose sediments bouncing off the helmet as they fall from the cliffs. On a windy day, it may be safer to avoid riding altogether. However, if you choose to ride, the pitter-patter of debris cascading down the slopes might stir anticipation and butterflies in the stomach. During such times, the friendly messages from theBorder Roads Organisation (BRO) along the way help uplift spirits.
In these rides, the mind often transcends into an isolated dimension where solitude is not synonymous with loneliness.
